Glory Gardens Cricket Club: Glory in the cup 8 / 10

ISBN-10: 0099461110 | ISBN-13: 978-0099461111 | Random House

Despite the story being older than the main characters in the book, it has held its age well and is as relevant today as it was when written in 1995.

The first of eight titles “Glory Gardens Cricket Club: Glory in the cup” is aimed at young children, that said even this adult enjoyed the read! The book is written with a child’s eye view of the world and to be honest it works rather well!

The book, introduces the reader to, amongst others the cricket loving Hooker, Erica, Jason and Azzie. A new team is formed called Glory Gardens Cricket Club with Hooker voted in as captain.

One of the interesting additions included in the book are scorecards, diagrams, statistics and a comprehensive summary of all the cricketing terms you are likely to come across.

The book is a combination of a “how to” book and a story. Buy Glory Gardens

As the story unfolds you will find explanations to how to mark a proper scorecard, the best way to play a number of shots including the forward defensive, cover drive and square cut.

If you cut out the story side of the first season, you are left with a guide to cricket, the laws and tactics. Now we aren't talking a heavy handed book here but a fun and entertaining guide for newcomers to the game and kids alike.

Where Bob has been clever is he has incorporated all of the above and made it a thoroughly useful and entertaining book for lovers of cricket. It probably won't have the same appeal to those who know the game inside out but if you have kids who want to get involved in the game or you want to explain something then this book will go some way to help!

There is a shortage of fictional cricket books for children and this is without doubt a great additional to what is available for kids to enjoy. I can see many a parent buying this as an introduction to cricket for their son or daughter. It would help to have an interest in cricket, usually passed on through the exuberance of the parent but it isn't essential to enjoy this story !

Certainly recommended, more individual reviews will follow – there are eight titles available and at such a low cost highly purchasable!
