Alexander
Bannerman was one of the first players to travel to
England to play in the first ever Test match to be played
in the country in 1880. The touring Australian's won
the match, Bannerman scored 32 in the first innings
and 8 in the second; he also took 3 of his 4 wickets
in the English first innings. England were dominant
at the time but that was to change 2 years later when
teh ashes were born. Bannerman re-visited England as
a cricketer in 1884, 1888 and finally in 1893. He was
a slow and patient scorer and once took 7 1/2 hours
to score 91 runs at Sydney in 1892, always preferring
to take a back seat to his partners during an innings.
