Charles
Bannerman was the older brother of Alexander, that is
where any similarities ended. Charles was the opposite
of his brother, a confident run getter, not afraid to
play his shots in cavalier style. He played in the first
ever Test match in March 1877, and was the first player
in Test cricket to face a ball, Alfred Shaw bowled the
first delivery. Bannerman also became the first centurion
in Test cricket scoring a chanceless 165 in 4 1/2 hours
before retiring hurt (split index finger) off the bowling
of Ulyett. Ill health robbed him of much more cricket
and he eventually turned to coaching and Test Umpiring
(he stood 12 times). Bannerman lost most of his wealth
to gambling and drink.
