Brian
Booth was a right-handed batsman, small in stature,
standing at 5 feet 11 1/2 inches. He had quick feet,
enabling him to dance to the pitch of the ball from
spinners and his ability to play a number of attacking
shots helped him enormously. He played for Australia
29 times, including two tours to England (in 1964
as vice captain), India, Pakistan and the West Indies.
Home Tests against England, South Africa and Pakistan
helped him become Australia's most consistent scorer
during this period, scoring 5 centuries at an average
of 42.21.
His
highest score of 169 came in the Brisbane Test against
South Africa in 1963/4. Captaining his side twice
in place of Bob Simpson against England in the 1965/6
season, he lost the last Test by an innings, and proving
the gentleman he was, stood outside the visitors changing
room and congratulated each of them on their victory.
He was never chosen to represent Australia again.
