Harry
Boyle was among the first Australian Players to tour
England in 1878. He was mainly a right arm bowler,
wasn't very quick (steady medium pace) and had to
rely on good line and length and his accuracy. He
was a tall man (no height on record) and because of
this, his ability to get the ball to rise sharply
off the pitch aided in his success. Playing against
the MCC in 1878, Boyle, Spofforth and Allan, dismissed
the MCC twice in one day. For the record, Boyle took
3 for 19 runs and 5 for 3 runs, 8 wickets in the match.
Boyle
toured England again in 1880, 82, 84, 88 and 90. Unfortunately
for him, he only played in 12 matches despite the
tours. Harry made up for his lack of Test playing
by taking 311 first class wickets at an average of
only 13.48 with 125 of them coming in the 1882 tour.
