Bill
Brown was a steady right-handed opening batsman who
never seemed to be in a rush to get started! He was
a prolific scorer in Test cricket, averaging at 46.82
at the end of his career. He was quick between the
wickets and in the field after training regularly
with professional sprinters. His best partnership
came when he partnered Sir Donald Bradman against
Queensland, scoring 294.
In
1934, Brown was preferred to Jack Fingleton when Australia
toured England. He opened for Australia for the first
time at Lord's and made the most of his opportunity
by scoring 105. Following his tour of South Africa
in 1935/6, he toured England again in 1938 -it was
to prove his best ever season scoring 1,854 runs (57.93),
only Bradman bettered this. During the tour, he scored
two Test centuries (133 at Trent Bridge and 206 at
Lord's). Like Bradman, Brown served as a Test selector,
well liked and respected by all who knew him
