Hanson
Carter was a short man, standing at only 5ft 5"
he was one of the shortest wicket-keepers to play Test
cricket. Born in Yorshire, moved to Sydney and played
for New South Wales and then Australia. He stood back
from the wickets, more so than most wicket-keepers due
to his style and height. Hanson was know and Sammy or
Sep, let very few byes go past him and took the ball
comfortably from the quickest bowlers of his time. Sammy
toured England in 1902, 1909 and 1921, it was in this
last tour that when 'home' in his native Yorshire, he
was the only player to play that had been born in Yorkshire.
A fine reader on the laws of the game, he pointed out
to fellow Australian captain (Warwick Armstrong) that
he had bowled two successive overs, which was not allowed
under the rules of the game. He was by proffession an
undertaker and was often seen arriving at the ground
in a hearse !
