Gordon
Chipperfield had only played three State matches in
Australia before being included on the 1934 tour to
England at the age of 29. He hit a century against
the touring MCC while playing for the Northern Districts
of New South Wales earlier that year to earn his place.
On his Test debut, he scored 99 playing at Trent Bridge.
Chipperfield played well enough and steady enough
to hold his place for all 5 Test matches averaging
37.58 with the bat.
Playing
against England in the return series in 1936/7, he
averaged 38.56, which included a score of 26 not out
in the first Test at Brisbane (Australia scored 58
all out). He was unlucky in the 1938 return tour to
England when he was ill with appendicitis. His best
score came against South Africa in 1935/6 where he
scored his only Test century (109), in the first Test
at Durban.
