Herbie
Collins, a right-handed batsman had a steady Test
career from 1920 to 1926. He was a batsman with a
great amount of patience and tremendous defensive
qualities, which led to him scoring 4 centuries in
his 6 year Test career.
Collins
was a regular opening bat and on his debut partnered
Warren Bardsley in the first Test at Sydney in 1920/1,
scoring 70 and 104. He continued his rich vein of
form in the third Test at Adelaide where he scored
a fine 162, and at the end of the series, Collins
had scored 557 runs. The following year he scored
his only double hundred (203) at Johannesburg. He
captained Australia in the home series of 1924/5,
winning the Ashes by 4 rubbers to 1, scoring 114 and
60 in the first Test at Sydney.
Ill
health in 1926 didn't prevent him in leading his side
to a tour of England, but suffering from Neuritis,
he wasn't at his best - the visitors lost the series.
This was his last tour in Test cricket and at the
age of 51, he married a much younger girl, a marriage
that lasted for 11 years. His downfall came through
his constant gambling. |
