Alan
Connolly was a right-arm fast medium bowler, tall
in stature and powerfully built. He toured England
twice in 1964 and 1968, due to a back injury in the
first his second tour was his most successful against
England taking 23 wickets at a cost of 25.69 runs.
Connolly
played 29 times for Australia, touring India twice
and South Africa once, where he was very successful
in the last four Tests of the 1969/70 tour taking
20 wickets against a strong South African side. One
interesting piece of history - he took his best bowling
figures of 6 for 47 against South Africa at Port Elizabeth
in what turned out to be the last time South Africa
played a Test match for 22 years - for the record
South Africa won by 323 runs.
He
played for Middlesex for three years, but had to cut
his association short due to a recurring back problem
and returned home in 1970/1. By taking 330 wickets
for Victoria, he was their leading wicket taker.
