'Fleetwood-Smith was a left arm spin bowler, bowling out of the back
of his hand. He was one of the rare bowlers who managed
to impart spin on the hardest of wickets at any pace
he bowled including medium pace bowling. Another player
who played in the Bodyline Series of 1932/3, Walter
Hammond was one of the few bowlers who mastered his
action, scoring freely against the Australian in the
series and again 6 years later on home soil.
Remarkably
he toured England in 1934 without playing a Test match
- remarkable due to the fact that he took 106 first
class wickets during the tour costing only 19.20 a
wicket. He never seemed to capture his first class
form in Test matches and was always a nearly player,
unable to transfer his bowling to a higher level.
Unfortunately Leslie Fleetwood-Smith died in Melbourne
in 1971 without a penny to his name. |
