Wally
Grout played for his state side as a renowned wicket-keeper
and sometimes opening bat. He played for Australia
51 times taking 163 catches and 24 stumpings. Grout
would always be remembered as a wicket-keeper who
more often than not dived down his leg side athletically
to save runs and take catches, some of his dismissals
were unforgettable.
He
played in four home series between 1958 and 1964,
toured England in 1961 and 1964 and also visited South
Africa, India, Pakistan and the West Indies. He claimed
what was at the time a record for dismissals in a
Test match in Johannesburg 1957/8, when he took 6
catches in one innings. He took 5 dismissals 5 times
in an innings during his Test career.
Wally
Grout showed how the game should be played during
a Test match against England, when he sportingly refused
to run Fred Titmus out who had become stranded after
colliding with another player. He died of a heart
attack, having kept news of an earlier attack away
from his colleagues.
