Barry Jarman was a good right-handed batsman who struggled in his
19 Test matches. He was eventually elevated to number
one status after following on from Wally Grout after
many years in his shadow. Jarman toured England three
times, once as Vice captain in 1968. He also toured
India, Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies and South
Africa. As a member of the squad for 11 series and
playing only 19 matches, it showed how hard it was
for him as a second string wicket keeper.
It was on
the tour to England in 1968 that he had the honour
of leading his country at Headingley (Bill Lawry out
injured) for the only time in his career. He was a
hard hitting batsman, scoring his highest Test score
of 78 against India in Calcutta (1964/5) but failed
to turn his first class form into test matches with
the bat (highest FC score of 196 in 1965/6 against
New South Wales at home for his state side South Australia)
