What is there to say about Dean Jones that hasn't been said ? A superb player not only for his state side but a long servant of his country Australia, playing in 52 Test matches in a long career. A tall, flamboyant, aggressive right handed batsman he was an asset to any team he played for. Not only was he a commanding batsman, but was an outstanding fielder. Australia's Test strength was such from the late 1980's, that his career was cut short in the early 90's due to many inform batsmen challenging for places and along with loosing popularity with the authorities he was put to one side for tests but deemed too good to leave out of the One Day International set up.

He first played against England at home in the 1982/3 series, and after a successful home season won a place on the tour to the West Indies, but with a strong bowling line up, his highest score was only 48. The later part of the 1980's saw an International struggle developing for Deano as he was overlooked for the 1985 tour to England, despite being second in the batting averages in domestic cricket scoring 681 runs and averaging 68.10 with the bat. However, two years later he resumed his rightful Test place against India. Scoring a well-rounded 210 in the high heat and humidity of Madras, he was rushed to hospital due to dehydration as the match ended in a famous tie.

England toured the following season, and Dean Jones was not overlooked scoring 184 runs at Sydney in the 5th Test match. Incredibly his career was still not a certainty even during his high scoring ventures due to the aforementioned strength of the Australian batting. Jones scored his highest Test score (216) against the West Indies at Adelaide in 1988/9. His final tour against England came in 1989 where he topped the tourists batting averages, scoring 1,510 runs at an average of 88.00 - included in this magnificent run were two test centuries at Edgbaston and The Oval. Despite great seasons with the bat in the early 90's, he was overlooked by the Test selectors and never regained his Test match status.
