Charles Kelleway was a right-handed batsman of often-endless patience,
grit and determination. During his career he opened
the batting and was always dependable during a collapse.
He toured England in 1912 with a very much-weakened
Australian side due to squabbles in the selection
process. Kelleway scored 360 runs in the 6 matches
he played on that tour, including a century (114)
against South Africa and 102 against England at Lord's.
His only other tour to England came in 1919 when he
captained the Australian Imperial side, but left on
a sour note before the tour ended, he was never to
play in England again.
Probably
his best score was that scored against England in
the home series of 1920/1 when he batted for seven
hours, scoring his highest Test score of 147 and in
so doing helped Australia dig themselves out of the
perilous hole they were in during the match at Adelaide.
Not only was he a great defensive batsman, he was
also a useful fast medium paced bowler, taking 52
wickets in his Test career, topping the Test averages
in the 1920/1 season.
