1st Match - Melbourne Cricket Ground, 1st - 6th January 1892, Australia
2nd Match - Sydney Cricket Ground, 29th January - 3rd February 1892
3rd Match - Adelaide Oval, 24th - 28th March 1892, Australia

England had by now won the last seven Test series, and cricket in Australia was loosing its popularity, partly due to the defeats and partly due to the joint tour fiasco of Australia in 1887 - 1888. Another tour was organised by Lord Sheffield (Sussex Patron) for 1891 - 1892, WG Grace was chosen as captain. Blackham the Australian wicket keeper was chosen as captain and began the first match in Melbourne by batting, it was New Year's day. This was Grace's first test in Australia and he responded well to Australia's score of 240 by scoring 50 runs, bean also scored 50 runs out of an England total of 264. In their second innings, Australia scored 286 runs leaving England 213 runs to score to take the match. After a solid start, Grace and Stoddart putting on 60 for the first wicket, England collapsed for only 158 runs. Australia won the first match by 54 runs.

In the second Test in Sydney, Lohmann captured eight Australian wickets for the second time in his career as the home side were dismissed for only 145. In reply England scored 307 with Bobby Abel becoming the first English batsman to carry his bat through a Test innings with a fine knock of 132. Unfortunately for England two things were to go against them in the remainder of the Test, rain and more importantly some great Australian batting. Lyons scored 134 and a very slow but important innings by Bannerman of 91 in 448 minutes. England were set 230 runs to win but could not handle the change of conditions and a rejuvenated Australian side and lost by 72 runs.

England took advantage of a superb batting strip at the Adelaide Oval and scored a total of 499, Stoddart scoring a fine 134, supported by Peel (83) and Grace (58). When a violent thunderstorm ended play on the second day, Australia were facing an uphill climb to avoid the follow on, let alone on a damaged pitch. When they came to bat on the third day they found the task too much and had no answer to Brigg's bowling, who took 12 wickets in the match. England ran out winners by an innings and 230 runs, however Australia had re captured the prized possession of the Ashes, and not before time either!
