After
the first Ashes win in 19 years, Hutton was again Captain
and led the English tourists to Australia for the only
time in his career. After choosing a fast bowling attack
he put Australia in and was left to rue the decision
as the home team scored 601 runs for the loss of 8 wickets,
Morris scoring 153 and Harvey scoring 162. Compton had
unfortunately injured his hand while fielding (fractured)
on a fence and was unavailable to bat, leaving the visitors
to lose by an innings and 154 runs.
England
were put in to bat at Sydney by the deputising Johnson,
and soon found themselves in trouble after being dismissed
for 154. In reply Australia scored a valuable 228 and
seemed to be heading for certain victory when England
were 3 for 55. However, thanks to May and Cowdrey who
had a partnership of 116, the tourists set Australia
223 to win after being bowled out for 296. Earlier in
the day, Tyson had been knocked unconscious by a Lindwall
bouncer, but still managed to bowl for England in Australia's
innings. Statham then partnered Tyson and both bowled
Australia out, thanks mainly to superb speed and aggression
shown by both bowlers. England eventually running out
winners by 38 runs.
Cowdrey
came to England's rescue in the third Test match in
Melbourne after Miller had ripped the tourists in half
and the first three wickets had fallen for only 5 runs.
A small recovery saw them reach 41 before loosing another
wicket, but thanks to the 102 from Cowdrey they managed
to reach 191. Just like the second match in the series,
Australia managed to gain the upper hand with a first
innings lead of 40. In their second innings, May guided
his team to 279 and left the home side to get 240 and
take a 2 -1 lead in the series. However, not for the
first time in the series Tyson (who took 7 for 27) and
Statham swept through the home side as they only made
111. England won back to back tests by 128 runs and
took a lead in the series for the first time.
Australia
batted first at Adelaide and for once things looked
to be going their way after scoring 323 runs. In reply
England closed the gap and took a first innings lead
scoring 341, Hutton scoring 80 and Cowdrey again in
the runs with 79. Australia unfortunately struggled
in their second innings and were dismissed for 111 for
the second Test in a row. Chasing only 94 runs to win,
England lost three quick wickets (once again to Miller)
but managed to hold their game together and win by 5
wickets. |
