Centenary
Test in England
1st
Match - Lord's, London, August
28th - September 2nd, 1980, England
1980
was the Centenary match held at Lord's to celebrate
the first test played 100 years earlier at the Oval
in 1880. Ian Botham was captain for the second centeary
match.
Unfortunately
what had been hoped to be a celebration of cricket,
ended in a damp festival as rain spoiled the first two
days play. Australia batted first and centuries by Wood
and Hughes, saw them to 385, where they declared loosing
only 5 wickets. England then scored 205, Boycott top
scoring with 62. The Lord's crowd grew restless because
of the lack of play and when Botham and the umpires
returned from a pitch inspection on the Saturday afternoon,
MCC members jostled them as they entered the pavilion.
Australia declared their second innings on 189, leaving
England to score 370 in only 350minutes. Boycott remained
not out (128) at the end and the game ended in a draw,
England finishing on 3 for 244. |
