Giffen was the first captain to give his opponents first innings on winning the toss.
Stoddart's innings was the highest in Test for England and the highest by an England
captain until 1974-75 when MH Denness scored 188.
Coningham took Mclaren's wicket with his first ball in his only Test to claim the first
instances of a wicket falling to the first ball of a Test match.
In England's second innings all eleven batsmen reached double figures for the first
time in a Test match innings.
