Australia gave fair warning to a confident England outfit that they had well and truly arrived in
the UK, beating Worcester by 360 runs. Damien Martyn who had scored 108 and together
with Shane Warne (68) on the first day was named man of the match.
Australia struggled early in their first innings soon finding themselves in a precarious position
with 3 wickets lost for only 59 runs, and then again with 6 down with only 178 runs on the
board. Martyn and Warne then combined to take the score on to 326 before Martyn lost his
wicket to Rawnsley, soon after completing his century. The final 3 wickets fell at regular
intervals and Australia were happy to have reached 351 all out.
Worcester struggled from the outset with only Singh (62) offering any resistance, but when he
became McGrath's 3rd wicket of the innings Worcester collapsed to 163 all out. Along with
McGrath, Bracken took 3 for 29 and there were 2 wickets each for Warne and Fleming.
The visitors took advantage of a big 1st innings lead with Waugh (M) and Hayden completing a
century partnership for the 1st wicket. Ponting chipped in scoring a well-crafted 65 and together
with Warne's 41 in 21 balls declared at 8 for 360, leaving the home side to score 549 unlikely
runs to win.
Damien Fleming instigated Worcestershire's struggle with two wickets in successive overs on
either side of lunch, Singh and Hick (first ball) both falling to slip catches.
Leatherdale (72) and Ali then offered the home side some hope of saving the match as the pair
put on 66 for the 7th wicket, McGrath trapping Ali leg before for a stubborn 39.
Sheriyar was the last man to fall, run out for 5 and there ended a sub standard opening test.
Australia winners by 360 runs with a little over 10 overs left to play on the final day. |
