Result: Middlesex won by 6 wickets - Match Scorecard
Toss:
Middlesex (put Australia in to bat)
Umpires:

Australia on the back of an impressive win against Worcester on Saturday, struggled at the
home of cricket in a warm up to the Nat West triangular tournament with a crushing 6 wicket
defeat at the hands of Middlesex.
Without team regulars Angus Fraser, Phil Tufnell and Stephen Fleming, it was left to youngster
Ben Hutton to steer the home side to an unexpected victory. Mike Roseberry hit Andrew
Symonds over square leg to win with 17 balls to spare to complete the win.
Paul Weekes (deputising as captain) won the toss and put Australia in to bat. The decision
was soon proved the correct one after Hewitt's opening spell put the visitors in trouble, taking
both opening wickets - Hayden in the 5th over for 3 and Mark Waugh in his next over for 14.
Ricky Ponting (57) and Ian Harvey (84) saved Australia from complete embarrassment when at
one stage the tourists were struggling at 6 for 108. They rallied and ended their innings scoring
232 runs in 44.2 overs.
Ponting hit 4 boundaries off his first 8 deliveries and his innings continued in this vein throughout
his innings reaching his half-century in only 41 balls, which included 11 fours. When Ponting
fell in the 20th over and one-day specialist Andrew Symonds for 4, Harvey took the game by
the scruff of the neck and reached his 50 in only 43 balls including 6 boundaries. Jason
Gillespie hung around with the all rounder and the pair put on 75 runs in 75 balls, leaving
Middlesex 233 runs to win
Needing to score at more than four-and-a-half an over, Middlesex were put well on their way to
their target with a second-wicket stand of 113 between Hutton - grandson of Sir Leonard - and
Owais Shah.
