Ashes 2001 Main Menu | Australia v Pakistan

NatWest Series, 2001, 2nd Match Sophia Gardens, Cardiff 9 June 2001 (50-over match)

Result: Australia won by 7 wickets - Scorecard

Toss: Pakistan (elected to bat)

Umpires: AGT Whitehead and P Willey

Waqar Younis won the toss for Pakistan at Cardiff and elected to bat on what appeared to be a good batting wicket. After a poor start they recovered well thanks to Youhana and Rashid Latif to reach 257 before they were dismissed on the penultimate ball of their allotted overs.

Leg-spinner Shane Warne who ended with figures of three for 52, took the dangerous wicket of Abdur Razzaq stumped with his first ball and then removed danger man Inzamam-ul-Haq two balls later for a duck, the Pakistan cavalier attempting a rash pull off the bowler and was well out of his crease, again Gilchrist removed the bails.

Pakistan slumped to 85 for six before being rescued by a seventh-wicket partnership of 124 between Yousuf Youhana, (91no), and Rashid Latif (66). Latif was unable to take to the field for Australia's innings after suffering from dehydration and his replacement Younis Khan who had never kept wicket before struggled.

Although Australia lost an early wicket (Adam Gilchrist for 18) to a very fast ball from Shoaib Akhtar, they never looked in trouble. Ponting (man of the match), looking in brilliant form, made 70 off 68 balls including 12 boundaries, and Mark Waugh made 47 as the two put on 92 from 88 balls for the second wicket. Captain Steve Waugh (54 not out) and Michael Bevan (56 not out) put on an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 116 as Australia reached the target in the 46th over.

Brett Lee, recalled after elbow surgery in place of the injured Jason Gillespie who was suffering with his hamstring, went for 16 off his first two overs and ended up conceding 85 runs of 10 overs - the most expensive figures by an Australian bowler.
