Fourth Day Report :
What an amazing start to the 4th day's play here at Lord's it was today. Alec Stewart and
Mark Butcher put the loose Australian bowling to the sword scoring fours at will, or so it
seemed. Steve Waugh decided that conditions were right for his brother to turn his arm;
after all he had managed to pick up Butcher's wicket twice in Test cricket.
It wasn't to be today, Stewart hit him for 3 fours in his second over and after a maiden in his
first it was a disappointment for the Australian part time bowler, famous for his partnership
break up bowling.
Brother Steve decided the time was right to call on Dizzy Gillespie and join Glenn McGrath at
the Pavilion End. It was McGrath that started the fight back when he trapped Alec Stewart leg
before for 28.
Stewart backing up could have no complaints about the decision from Steve
Bucknor.
In came Ian Ward, and back he went; the very next ball to a superb catch to Ricky Ponting at
third slip, one of the best catches you are likely to see. Glenn McGrath was now on a hat trick
and what a well deserved one it would be too. White, on a pair and his 6 successive duck
managed to leave the hat trick ball alone and survived a tense moment.
Gillespie got into the action in the next over when he had Butcher fishing for a wide delivery and
the faintest edge was enough to send him packing, caught behind by Gilchrist, his second catch
of the day and Gillespie's third wicket.
Australia were in total command at this point, 3 wickets falling, o runs scored off only 10 balls.
Five runs were added before McGrath claimed his third wicket of the morning; Cork the man to
suffer, caught by Shane Warne in the slips for 2.
There was little hope for England at this point, if there had been at any stage during the match in
all honesty.
The tail wagged for a short while, Craig White hitting four 4's off Gillespie in one over and in doing
so, Caddick and White had made Australia have to bat again. The euphoria was short lived and
Gillespie soon took Andy Caddick's wicket, once again caught behind by Adam Gilchrist. In a
fitting end to the Test match, Gillespie joined forces with arguable the greatest slip fielder in Test
history; Mark Waugh.
In taking the final catch of the innings, Mark Waugh had taken more catches
than anyone else in Test cricket, 158; 1 more than fellow Aussie Mark Taylor.
Australia required 14 runs to win but all did not go quite according to plan, Caddick and Gough each
taking a wicket in their spells. With the fall of Slater and Ponting, it was left to Hayden to hit the
winning run off the first ball of Caddick's second over and Australia had won by 8 wickets taking a
2-0 lead in the 5 match series.
Glenn McGrath won man of the Match
