Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Just
when the England camp thought things couldn’t
get worse they meet a rampant Australia team in Adelaide
on a cracking pitch on Australia day; a deadly combination!
The tourists who now have to win
at least two of their remaining three matches complete
with bonus point following the nine wicket defeat. Both
Glenn McGrath and Nathan Bracken were rested but even
this failed to help an England team desperate to record
their first win on tour against Australia in any form
of cricket.
England began well enough after
winning the toss, Loye yet again on the offensive when
he swept a huge six off Mitchell Johnson. The ball was
lost out of the ground and had to be replaced. Loye
didn’t last long after the big hit when he nicked
a ball to Adam Gilchrist.
Strauss fell to a combination of
Johnson and Gilchrist for just 17 runs and England
were in trouble at 2 for 47. Strauss has had his fair
share of bad calls this summer but he has now embarked
on a poor run of form he needs to get himself out of.
Bell looked in good form after a
long net session yesterday and together with Ed Joyce
took the score on to 72 before the third wicket fell,
Bell cutting Stuart Clark to point and Michael Clarke
happy to oblige with the catch.
Lee was recalled to the attack and
seven runs later and his second delivery of his new
spell tempted Joyce into playing an ill advised pull
shot succeeding only to lob the ball to Johnson at mid
on. Two runs later Collingwood played a bizarre and
indescribable shot to Clark at mid off. England were
in desperate trouble at 5 for 81 and unlikely to reach
a competitive total on a slow wicket.
Despite a short lived stand
of 22 between Flintoff and Dalrymple the final five
wickets fell for just seven runs, Johnson ending his
spell with 4 for 45. Bowled out for just 110 and 34.3
overs it meant that England took to the field before
the scheduled lunch break. The total is England's fourth
worst total in one day cricket equalling the score they
made on the 1999 tour of Australia.

Chasing the low total Gilchrist
soon set about attacking the weak lacklustre attack
hitting four off-side boundaries in one over of Plunkett.
However just as Gilchrist looked set to score a quick
fire half century he was run out for 23 just ahead of
the lunch break.
Despite Collingwood spilling a chance
given by Australian captain Ponting at first slip the
result was never in doubt with Ponting helping himself
to three glorious leg-side boundaries off one over to
increase the run rate and close out the game. Ponting
ended the day on 51 not out and Hayden 30 unbeaten. |
