BoparaIt isn’t very often that an England test squad comes as much of a surprise. Normally, someone would have predicted what would happen because of inside information or a gut feeling.

However, when the 12-man strong squad for the first test against the West Indies was announced yesterday, there was undoubtedly a great deal of surprise amongst the fans and the pundits themselves.

Just to recap, here is the squad in full:

Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Graham Onions, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann.

The first thing that everyone noticed was the omission of senior players Michael Vaughan, Ian Bell, Owais Shah and Steve Harmison. At least two of them were expected to be given the nod and if anything, it made a refreshing change that the cricket odds were upset.

Instead, Ravi Bopara was chosen to bat at No.3 with Onions and Bresnan called up for the first time to support Anderson and Broad in the seam
bowling department.

The only choice for the selectors now ahead of the first test, presuming they don’t play two spinners at Lords, is whether to select Swann or Panesar as the senior spinner.

This means that both Onions and Bresnan will make their test debuts at Lords and this represents a change in the selectors’ thinking. They have decided to take a risk on the potential of two young bowlers who have performed consistently well for their County teams.

It seems as though the ECB have finally stood up and made a bold decision or two. Instead of staying loyal to players for too long or recalling players too soon, they have given the team a fresh look. Personally, I think this can only be a good thing.

Ahead of the Ashes, England could do with finding a couple of players who can slot into the team without many problems. If they stuck with Harmison or recalled Bell, there was a chance that the old habits would come back.

This way, they have two players in their seam attack that will be starting afresh and doing all they can to keep their place in the team for the summer. Even if just one of Onions or Bresnan holds down a place for the Ashes, these decisions will be worth it.

As for Bopara’s promotion to No.3 in the batting line-up, this is another positive move. The Essex man has rarely had a chance to shine in his preferred position for England and now he has a real opportunity to fulfil his undoubted potential.

If he can score runs against the West Indies in this position, it would be a huge weight off the selectors’ shoulders. The No.3 spot has bothered England for months now and it is up to Bopara to make it his own. Good luck to him I say.

Overall, the squad selected is exciting. There is something to look forward to in this series against the West Indies. In terms of which spinner to choose, I’d go for Swann. He was too good in the winter to drop for an inconsistent Panesar. So, here is the team to play West Indies at Lords.

Cook
Strauss
Bopara
Pietersen
Collingwood
Prior
Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Onions
Anderson

A fresh looking team for new coach Andy Flower, now let’s push on.

Gravy and cricket - perfect!

Gravy and cricket - perfect!

With the inevitable inclusion of Durham seamer Graham Onions to the England squad for the first Test against West Indies starting next week, one thing that immediately came to mind for me …..will the prolific Antiguan Gravy (full name Labon Kenneth Blackburn Leeweltine Buckonon) be jumping on a plane and lending his gyrating hips and vocal support to a resurgent West Indies?

I can see the headlines now “Onion Gravy, the perfect combination”, “Onions and Gravy meet head on”, “Onions and Gravy keep it real”. It would certainly bring a whole new meaning to the luncheon interval!

Onions, who will debut against the visitors next week if he can impress Flower, was part of the England set up three years ago for the one day internationals against Pakistan. However he failed to claim a spot in the starting 11 then and will be keen to move a step in the right direction when the final 11 are announced next week.

I found out at half past seven this morning from Mr Miller (national selector Geoff Miller), so I was very, very pleased,” Onions told ecb.co.uk.

“I had to be a little bit quiet because the alarm hadn’t gone off yet and I’m rooming with Phil Mustard, so I didn’t want to wake him up. I was very, very excited – a little bit of a spring in my step really.”

So who will win the first Test ? Will England manage to scrape a victory without the services of Flintoff? Will Pietersen put his poor run of form in the IPL to one side and carve a great innings out of the West Indian bowlers? Only time will tell, but one thing we can be certain of – the weather will be glorious!!!!!

Don’t you just love it when you hear the other side of the phone call? The mind does boggle though; I’m sure Gordon Ramsey could do something with Flower, Mustard, Gravy and Onions – or maybe the great White chef at Hell’s Kitchen could muster something palatable up?

Cricket Australia today announced fast bowler Brett Lee will join the Australian squad in Abu Dhabi tomorrow. Great to see the “big man” moving forward and continuing with his steady progress towards his Ashes recovery.

Lee has spent the past fortnight in South Africa continuing his recovery from ankle surgery.

Australian Team Doctor Trefor James said:

“Brett Lee has progressed well in his recovery from ankle surgery while in South Africa over the past fortnight.

“He will join the Australian squad in Abu Dhabi tomorrow, where he will continue to train and be further assessed.

“Should his progress be far enough advanced, he may be considered for selection in the remaining matches of the one-day series and the Twenty20 match in Dubai.”

The Australian team will meet Pakistan in another two one-day matches in Abu Dhabi and one Twenty20 match in Dubai to conclude the current series.

If I had my way I wouldn’t even consider Lee for the full One Day Internationals. Why risk it now? Give him a  run out in the Twenty20 match by all means, he only has to bowl two overs if required. The Twenty20 is meaningless and gives Lee and the selectors a chance to take a look at him in a gentle run out.

Without doubt, the most important part of his summer will be to get ready for the 2009 Ashes which kicks off in July. If he is 100% fit then all well and good.

Andrew Flintoff has today returned home from the Indian Premier League to undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Flintoff had been appearing for Chennai Super KIngs in the IPL when he felt discomfort in his right knee. The Chennai medical staff immediately contacted ECB Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Peirce

Scans were taken of the right knee in a Durban hospital and they detected a slight medial meniscal tear in the knee and after these scans were viewed by Nick Peirce, radiologists the surgeon it was decided that Flintoff should return to London.

He will undergo an operation early next week and surgeons are confident that he should recover from the keyhole surgery within three to five weeks.

Nick Peirce said: ‘Clearly this is a huge disappointment for both the player and the IPL team. This sort of degenerative injury though is one that could have happened at any time any where. The procedures we put in place meant that the ECB medical staff were alerted about the problem immediately and we thank Chennai for their co operation.’

Hugh Morris, England Cricket Managing Director, added: ‘Andrew has been extremely unlucky with injuries but if there is one saving grace it is that the injury has occured now rather than on the eve of either the ICC World Twenty20 or the npower Ashes.

‘Having the surgery now means that Flintoff should be available for both those events although he is certain to miss the npower Test series against the West Indies.’

England will announce their side for the first npower Test series against the West Indies on April 29 and the final 15 and captain for the ICC World Twenty20 as well as the squad for the NatWest ODIs against the West Indies will be announced on May 1.

Hoggard remains angry over snub and rightly so

Matthew Hoggard has taken 248 test wickets in his career. He is one of the best swing bowlers that England have had in recent years and you just know that he will run in and bowl all day long for his country.

Despite this though, he is yet to get a look in for England since being dropped from the side in New Zealand just over a year ago. This is something that he is extremely unhappy about and you can understand why.

Steve Harmison – who has had his commitment questioned a number of times – was dropped at the same time as Hoggard and keeps getting opportunities to shine in England colours. Why then, has Hoggard not got anything like the same treatment?

Speaking about his situation, the Yorkshire bowler said that he has had no contact with the ECB whatsoever about not being included in the England performance squad for the summer. For someone who has given so much for his country, this seems unacceptable to me.

When Hoggard was dropped, it was fair enough. He wasn’t himself in New Zealand and didn’t produce half of the threat that he had in previous years, including the 2005 Ashes series.

However, this dip in performance was partly due to not being in the right state mentally. His wife was suffering with post-natal depression and his mind wasn’t in the game. He even said that at one stage, he felt as though he ‘wanted to cry’.

Since this moment though, he hasn’t even been mentioned for England. Hoggard lost his central contract five months later and now isn’t even part of the 30-man squad that England are going with this summer. Was this really on the back of one performance in New Zealand?

There was one moment in particular since his omission from the side that would have been perfect for his return. Last summer, Hoggard was
overlooked for the test match at Headingley (his home ground) against South Africa despite being a centrally contracted player.

Instead, Darren Pattinson was given the call and he played his part in a comfortable defeat for England. Hoggard recalls how he ‘wasn’t even offered the courtesy of an explanation’ for this decision. This just isn’t good enough in my opinion – Hoggy has been treated appallingly.

Even though it could well be too late for him now, he at least deserved an explanation. Why was someone who has given so much to the England cause completely ignored? It’s not as if the team has been winning test matches on a regular basis.

It seems a safe cricket bet to me that Hoggard is considered by many as one of the best swing bowlers England have had. He is also one of the most popular players England have ever had and he deserves more than this. Keep plugging away for Yorkshire Hoggy, we (the fans) won’t forget what you did for England.

British Lions Kit 2009

British Lions Kit 2009

In what has to be the worst kept secret of the last 12 months, Ireland’s Paul O’Connell has been confirmed as British and Irish Lions captain for the three-Test summer tour to South Africa. The new kit can be found here.

O’Connell is one of fourteen players from Ireland. The second rower has had a great season so far and was part of the 2005 Lions tour to New Zealand where the tourist lost all three Test matches. For a full fixture list please scroll down to the end of this post.

The British Lions match and training kit can be found here.

Great to see Lee Byrne get his recognition for the stellar work he has put in for Wales and ospreys this season. I’m pleased to see Henson out of the squad, with the injury prone Welshman sidelined for the majority of the crunch matches this season I don’t think he has earned a spot in the final squad. England’s Armitage will consider himself unfortunate to miss out. I think he’s done well this season and could have been a very good player to have in the squad.

I can’t wait for the tour to start and see if the Lions will be able to cope with the harsh realities of touring South africa. it’s not going to be easy but with the majority of the squad made up of Irish and welsh they have every chance.

The tour kicks off on May 30th against Highveld XI, the first of six warm up games ahead of the first Test in Durban on June 20th. The tour ends on the 4th July with the final of three Tests in Johannesburg.

Flintoff and Pietersen in action Saturday

Flintoff and Pietersen in action Saturday

Following the “will they, won’t they” saga that has surrounded the second Indian Premier League (IPL), the competition the World (ok a slight exaggeration!) has waited to see kicks off tomorrow in South Africa. The cheerleaders are ready, the players are ready and the sponsors are ready – the only question that remains; will the tournament be supported at ground level and on television by the cricket fans?

The first four matches will be played in Cape Town, two on Saturday and two on Sunday. The defending champions, Rajasthan Royals, captained by the mercurial Shane Warne, play Bangalore Royal Challengers in the second game.

Setanta Sports, who hold the UK television rights, have been plugging the IPL furiously. No great surprise given that the tournament is no doubt one of the jewels in their crown. They’ve worked hard to get it and like Sky and the premier league, won’t be giving it away easily!

Rajasthan Royals

Given the confusion surrounding the future of the IPL a little over a month ago there is no doubt that the IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has performed miracles in moving the competition to South Africa. Setanta’s Full TV Schedule

Whatever you say about Modi, one thing you could never do is accuse him of not being confident! He wants to turn the IPL into a world beater and play on the same stage as the big English premier teams, so to speak! A list of fixtures from the official site can be found here!

“My only choice was to turn it into an opportunity,” he went on to say “Now we hope IPL teams become worldwide teams like Manchester United and Chelsea. That’s the objective and we are able to turn that into a reality now.

“Our aim is to build fanbases across the world. In England you have EPL [the Barclays Premier League] and they all have fans all over the world. My son likes Manchester United. He has never been to a game but watches religiously on television. We want people to get attached to teams and it’s a huge opportunity to build IPL as a global brand.”

Warne prepares for KP showdown on Saturday

Warne prepares for KP showdown on Saturday

I just can’t see it being that big outside of India. For sure the competition will benefit from a new South African crowd but given that the IPL will return to India next year, the competition remains blinkered. I’ve spoken to a number of players and fans on the subject and the enthusiasm remains mixed.

Few have any interest in the results but surely the cricket fans who love the short version of the great game will flock to watch on screen? South Africa have worked hard to organise the schedule in such a tight turnaround and have to be commended.

Making sure that the competition retains an Indian flavour the powers that be have decided to hold a Bollywood beauty pagent – not quite sure how this goes down but we won’t have long to wait!

At all the 56 league games, one girl from the crowd will be named a winner at each of the games. One finalist from each venue will be chosen, leaving eight winners in the final round to be held on May 24 during the final. This final lucky winner could earn a role in Hindi cinema, Rand 50,000 and also the title of Miss Bollywood SA.

The winner will be chosen by a special panel who will then anoint the lucky girl.

“We’re looking for someone who has the star quality to stand out in a crowd, probably without even trying that hard. It’s that special, almost indefinable, quality that makes someone a star more than a beauty queen that we are looking for,” said Modi.

It’s a huge shame a country as big as India couldn’t find the necessary security to look after the competition. I’m still trying to get my head around the initial scheduling and why both events were to take place at the same time. Crazy if you ask me!

In one of the most inevitable appointments in English cricket history, former Zimbabwe player Andy Flower was appointed as England’s team
director yesterday. After acting as temporary head coach during the winter, he got the nod to take on the role full-time.

I say that it was inevitable, simply because it would have been a risk to go elsewhere and traditionally, the ECB don’t take too many risks. Flower had earned rave reviews from the players, offered continuity and was the sensible choice.

It seems that Flower’s positive relationship with captain Andrew Strauss was also a telling factor. Would the ECB risk appointing someone who Strauss might not get on with quite so well? No. Again – too risky for Hugh Morris and co.

In all fairness though, this was probably the best choice for England. It doesn’t seem as though there were enough top quality candidates available to justify upsetting the continuity.

Flower said that ‘halfway through’ the West Indies tour, he decided he wanted the job. From this moment, he was always going to be one of the
favourites to land the position.

Now that captain and coach are both in place, it is time to properly look ahead to the summer. There is plenty of cricket to be played before the Ashes, but this is bound to be what Flower and the team are judged on.

Speaking about his team’s chances against Australia, Flower said that England ‘can win the Ashes’. He admitted that the team would have to ‘play very well, work hard and plan well’ in order to do so, but was more than optimistic that this can be the case.

It seems clear to me though that momentum will play a huge part in England’s success. Should they have a disappointing first half of the summer, it’s a safe cricket bet to make that it will be  difficult to go into the Ashes in confident mood.

Flower needs to use the respect he has gained from the players and make sure they are motivated to face the West Indies and to compete in
the World Twenty20 tournament. This could be just as important as the Ashes themselves. Nobody should underestimate momentum in this sport.

Hopefully, Flower can be the man to lead England to a successful summer. His appointment should settle the team down somewhat and his straight talking could be just what the players need.

All of Flower’s positive attributes, combined with some decent selection decisions, could result in a decent summer for England. A lot of things have to fall into place quite quickly though, so there is a lot of work to be done.

At this moment in time, there won’t be many England cricket fans who would rule out Michael Vaughan playing a part in this year’s Ashes series. A combination of his leadership, his record against Australia and the fact that no-one has taken hold of the No.3 slot mean that he will fancy his chances.

There is, of course, the old adage that everyone should be in the team when they are out of it. Look at Owais Shah for example. When Ian Bell was keeping him out of the team, everyone was saying that he was the answer to the No.3 problems.

However, having been given a decent run in the team, ‘Shah isn’t quite up to it’ has been the party line. With a huge summer of cricket ahead, this means that there is a position in the batting line-up that is very much up for grabs.

Vaughan will know that he has to show some sign of form in the early part of the summer to have a chance. The latter part of his England career will go down as relatively unsuccessful with the bat, after all.

In his most recent three test matches as an England player, against South Africa last summer, Vaughan only averaged 8. In New Zealand the previous winter, he only averaged 20.50. There were cracks showing in his technique and this contributed to him resigning from the captaincy.

This is why he must show signs of decent form if he is to return. However, this is more than possible. Having listened to his last
couple of interviews, he seems more determined than ever. He seems more focused than ever. He seems more relaxed than ever.

Hopefully, this will show in his batting. Vaughan is a class act  and England could do with someone like him in the dressing room. It does mean that there would be lots of ex-captain’s around – Vaughan, Flintoff, Pietersen and Collingwood – but hopefully this would just add to the leadership qualities.

Overall, I am not saying that Vaughan should definitely be in the England team this summer. However, the door should remain open for him. Yes, he is 34-years-old, but this just means that there isn’t long to make the most of his talents.

The Ashes this summer could present a real opportunity for Vaughan to go out of test cricket with a bang. Given the chance, I just get the feeling that he would be a real thorn in Australia’s side.

Strauss, Cook, Vaughan, Pietersen, Collingwood as a top five, is my cricket prediction. It looks pretty good to me and is probably the best England have to offer right now.
