Australia captain Ricky Ponting says England may be better off without Andrew Flintoff in their Ashes side, unless the key player is 100% fit.

Ponting said Flintoff was not the force he had been in 2005 when he led England to a 5-0 defeat in Australia 18 months later after an injury comeback.

“Flintoff is obviously very important to England’s set-up,” said Ponting. The BBC Reports in full here.

“Maybe, as we saw in 2007, if he’s not 100% fit then maybe that sort of impact he can have is not there.”

Ponting, whose team are currently based in Nottingham preparing for the ICC World Twenty20, begin their five-Test Ashes defence on 8 July.

He was happy to give his views on Flintoff, who tore knee cartilage while playing in the Indian Premier League in April – and was subsequently ruled out of all England’s international cricket until the Ashes.

Whether or not to field Flintoff in the first Test at Cardiff – perhaps on the back of just a game or two for Lancashire – will be “the great decision the England selectors are going to have to make,” said Ponting.

“In 2005 and in 2007 we saw two completely different players and that had a lot to do with the level of fitness that he had under his belt going into each series.

“That’s where they’re going to have a tough decision to make.”

Ponting said he felt “relaxed, fresh and rejuvenated” after a four-week break from cricket.

Michael Hussey said this summer’s Ashes would be a “huge challenge” as he landed in England with the rest of the Australia squad on Thursday. BBC Report in full Here

Batsman Hussey starred as Australia won the 2006-07 series 5-0, but he believes England have improved since then.

“England have added a lot of depth to their squad over the last couple of years and have got guys playing confident cricket,” he said.

“I think it will be a very close series and very challenging for both teams.”

Hussey, 34, is part of Australia’s squad for the ICC World Twenty20, which England are hosting throughout June.

India are favourites to win that competition, but the biggest prize for English and Australian cricket fans is in July and August, when rivalries resume in the five-match Ashes series.

Can Flintoff make an impact this summer?

folWhen Andrew Flintoff picked up his latest injury in the Indian Premier League, it was suggested that he would comfortably be fit for the World Twenty20 tournament and the Ashes. Now though, he has been ruled out of the former with there being increasing concerns over the latter.

It was announced yesterday that although Flintoff’s knee injury is on the mend, he will not be available for England’s World Twenty20 campaign next month. The all-rounder – who has been replaced by Adil Rashid – will continue his rehab to ensure that he is fit to face Australia.

To be honest though, I am starting to have my doubts about this. It has been setback after setback for the 31-year-old in the last few years and there is no way you could rule out another one. There is still over a month to go until the Ashes – plenty of time for another injury problem for Freddie.

This may come across as pessimism, but it is very realistic. There is no way anyone connected with England can claim that Flintoff will be fit for every single Ashes test. Then, you have to question how much of an impact he can have if he only plays a small part in the series.

Is it really of benefit to the England team if he keeps coming in and out of the side? Will this upset the momentum picked up in the first part of the summer? He won’t have played much cricket if he does declare himself fit – would he be at his best?

There is always a chance that he will raise his game when the Ashes come around I suppose. In 2005, he was on fire and seemed indestructible. Sadly though, we haven’t seen him like this since and we probably won’t ever again. This is a crying shame, but is a fact that England and Flintoff have had to face.

I hope Flintoff proves me wrong and manages to get himself fit and in form in time for the first test in Cardiff. However, after this latest setback, I am going to have to see it before I can believe it. With regards to Ashes bets, don’t be too quick to bet on Andrew Flintoff to excel, or even appear, in the Ashes.

Whoever said that lightening doesn’t strike twice certainly wasn’t a cricket fan. Following Australian opener Phillip Hughes’ magnificent short but profitable stint for Middlesex, Australian paceman Stuart Clark is set to join Gloucestershire on a similar deal ahead of the Ashes.

Gloucestershire County Cricket have confirmed that they are waiting on a visa application for the Australian and are eager to welcome the bowler to the club. James Franklin, New Zealand’s pace bowler will be leaving for the World Twenty/20 and the English club are desperate for a replacement.

A spokesman for the club said;

“We are just waiting for a visa for Stuart Clark before we can confirm the deal,” a spokeswoman said.

“But we have been in negotiations and would hope he gets the visa.”

Clark is in need of match practice ahead of the Ashes, which start on July 8, after a long injury lay-off following elbow surgery.

If the visa application is successful it is certain to once again open the contentious debate of whether Australians should be allowed key practice in England ahead of the most coveted tournament in cricket. As I reported earlier, Phillip Hughes scored 574 runs in three games for Middlesex at an average of 143.50.

Hughes arrived back in Sydney.

“It couldn’t have really worked out any better,” he told reporters on his return to Sydney.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it and the preparation has been great to be honest.”

“I think the big thing that came out of it was that I played at three Test grounds I’m going to be playing on and got to experience them before this big series coming up.”

“Lord’s was obviously my home ground there for Middlesex – and I played at the Oval as well and Edgbaston. It couldn’t have really worked out any better.”

“The big thing was just going over there to experience the whole different culture really, the weather, the wickets and the bowlers as well.”

Phillip Hughes, the new wonder kid on the block for Australia has, despite furious calls for Middlesex to cancel his contract, produced a dazzling display of batting ahead of this summer’s Ashes.

Hughes has scored a record-breaking four hundreds in four week for the county and at the same time gaining invaluable experience not only at Lord’s but the English weather conditions too!.

The 20-year-old left-hander arrived back in Australia on Friday. His knocks included 118 on debut against Glamorgan, 139 against Leicestershire and 195 against Surrey at the Oval to become the first Australian player to score centuries in his opening three first-class games in England.

More importantly he has also played on three of the five Ashes venues ahead of the Test series against England in July and August. This fact has not been lost on the English media and together with an outcry of emotion from partisan supporters, he has had quite a welcome to England!

“I thoroughly enjoyed it and the preparation has been great to be honest,” Hughes said.

“The big thing was just going over there to experience the whole different culture, the weather, the wickets and the bowlers as well.”

“Lord’s was obviously my home ground for Middlesex and I played at the Oval and Edgbaston as well. It couldn’t have really worked out any better.

Comparisons to the great Don Bradman have surfaced but he has a long way to emulate the Don as Hughes himself admitted

“It is flattering (to be compared with) the world’s best player and the best player anyone’s ever seen”

Pietersen out of the NatWest Series with Achilles tendon injury

Kevin Pietersen has been withdrawn from England’s NatWest Series squad due to a minor right achilles tendon injury.

Pietersen will undertake a period of rest and treatment during the NatWest Series ahead of England’s ICC World Twenty20 campaign.

Nick Peirce, ECB chief medical officer, said: “The achilles injury flared up following the 2nd npower Test match in Durham and the best course of treatment is for Kevin to rest throughout the NatWest Series.

“The injury would not necessarily prevent him from playing but by giving him a precautionary period of time out to receive some concentrated treatment and rest we are enabling the niggle to settle down in preparation of the ICC World Twenty20 and the Ashes. This is not an injury that would preclude him from participating in either event.”

Kevin Pietersen said:”I’m extremely disappointed to be missing the NatWest Series as I was looking forward to playing a significant part in what should be an exciting and closely-fought One-Day series.

“The medical advice is to rest the achilles and although I’m frustrated to be leaving a happy and successful dressing room I’m absolutely confident this will help me overcome what has up until now been a minor ongoing injury.

“I hate missing out on playing for England but understand that in this instance it’s necessary in order to overcome the injury. Even though I won’t be lining up for England during this series I’ll be watching and supporting the team closely as they set about repeating the recent one-day series win in the Caribbean.

“I’m looking forward to being back in the England line up for the World Twenty20 and the rest of an exciting summer of cricket.”

England has not called up a replacement to its NatWest Series squad.

Bresnan aware of Flintoff battle

timIn the aftermath of taking his first test match wickets for England, Tim Bresnan has admitted that he will struggle to stay in the team when Andrew Flintoff returns to full fitness.

The England all-rounder is currently recovering from knee surgery and is expected to be fit enough to take part in this summer’s Ashes test cricket. This means that Bresnan – who has come in to replace Flintoff – is the most likely man to step aside.

Speaking about the prospect of Flintoff taking his place, Bresnan said that the Lancashire man is a ‘massive asset’ to this England team and that the selectors will find it hard to ignore him when he becomes available again.

Bresnan clearly admires Flintoff as a player because he went on to say that he is an ‘unbelievable cricketer’. This means that when he is able to return to the fold, Flintoff is ‘well within his rights’ to walk straight back into the team.

This doesn’t mean that Bresnan is giving up his place in Andrew Strauss’ line-up though, not by any means. He has revealed how he plans to continue ‘working hard to retain my place’.

How did Bresnan do in his two test matches for England then? Well, the team as a whole did brilliantly and being part of this winning team will do his chances of a run in the side no harm at all.

On a personal level, Bresnan wasn’t given too much to do in the first test and as such, failed to make an impact. Then, in the second test at the Riverside, he had to wait until the final day before he took his first wicket.

The 24-year-old then helped England secure victory by taking 3-45 after dismissing Brendan Nash, Fidel Edwards and Denesh Randin. It was
a good way to end the series for him and it will do his confidence no harm at all.

As for whether he can keep Flintoff out of the side, that is a different matter entirely. There are other slots in the team that aren’t certain though so if Bresnan manages to impress during the One Day Internationals and the ICC World Twenty20, there is no reason why he can’t line up alongside Flintoff against the Australians.

Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP) today announced a 16-man squad for the five-Test Ashes Series during Australia’s VB Tour of England. The first Test of the series, to be played in Cardiff, will begin in 50 days.

“The Ashes squad contains an exciting blend of experience and youth.  The core of the squad is made up of the side which successfully won the Test series in South Africa and includes Phillip Hughes and Marcus North who both scored hundreds on debut.

“The young fast bowling group which performed so well in South Africa of Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus will all be taking part in their first Ashes tour to England and as shown in South Africa, they have the skills to perform at the international level and will be well suited to English conditions.

“The bowling group has been further strengthened by the return from injury of Brett Lee and Stuart Clark.

“Andrew McDonald played a very important role in both Australia’s victory in the last Test match in Australia and on the recent series in South Africa and has been rewarded with his first Ashes squad selection.

“Shane Watson has been named in the squad subject to fitness, but that is not expected to be a serious issue as he is recovering from a very mild groin strain at present and is expected to be fully fit for the ICC World Twenty20 in the UK and the commencement of the Ashes. Shane in our view has the ability to bat anywhere in the order and enables us to have a batsman in the top six who can provide quality pace support for the fast bowling group.

“Graham Manou has also been rewarded with his first squad selection for an Australian team following very strong interstate performances in all forms of the game over the last few seasons.

“We expect the Ashes to be an exciting and riveting encounter, consistent with the great tradition of rivalry between England and Australia.  Attempting to beat England on home soil is a great challenge for this young Australian squad and both Ricky and the squad are looking forward to it immensely.  It promises to be a very exciting series.”

The Australian Twenty20 squad will depart for the United Kingdom on Wednesday. The five-Test Ashes Series will begin on Wednesday 8 July with the first Test in Cardiff.

Ricky Ponting has given his strongest hint yet that Andrew Symonds’s Test exile will end when Australia’s Ashes squad is named on Wednesday. More from the BBC

The all-rounder has endured a string of off-field and injury problems over the past year, fuelling talk the 33-year-old will be overlooked for the series.

But skipper Ponting believes he will be named in the squad, saying: “He’s had his battles but he’s a great guy.”

Ponting also indicated Brett Lee and Stuart Clark are likely to win recalls.

The pace duo have missed the Australian summer because of ankle and elbow injuries respectively, but both are expected to play key roles as Australia attempt to retain the Ashes they won back in 2006.
