Mahanama clarifies TV umpire’s decision in Johannesburg Test

As was reported widely in all the broadsheets and major sport websites yesterday England were to lodge a formal complaint over Daryl Harper. In response to this, ICC match referee Roshan Mahanama has sought to clarify the TV umpire’s decision against South Africa opener Graeme Smith during the second day’s play in the fourth and last Test against England in Johannesburg on Friday.

“The England side, after Graeme Smith was adjudged not out by on-field umpire Tony Hill off the bowling of Ryan Sidebottom, requested for a review of the decision which was accepted and referred to third umpire Daryl Harper.

“The third umpire, when reviewing the decision, used a range of technologies that were made available to him by the host broadcaster, including the slow-motion replays, amplified stump microphone sound (at normal speed and slow motion), approved ball-tracking technology and pitch mat generated by the ball-tracking technology.

“During the review, the TV umpire followed the correct protocol and as he did not hear any noise to indicate the ball hitting the bat, he recommended Mr Hill to uphold his earlier decision. It must be noted that umpire’s decision is final.

“There have also been suggestions in a section of the press that Mr Harper had turned down the feed volume. It is clarified that the volume on the third umpire’s feed, right throughout the series, had been configured to optimise the quality of the audio, by both an SABC Head Engineer and the ICC technical advisor.

“It is also worthwhile to mention here that at no stage I indicated to the England team management that the third umpire had forgotten to adjust the volume of the speakers. I had actually briefed the England team management of the protocols that were followed during this review.

“If the audio level had been increased above its optimum level, distortion on the audio feed would have occurred and the feed might not have given a clear indication of the true sound.

“It should be kept in mind that the TV umpires sometimes receive feeds which are at a different level to what others are receiving for the simple fact that various broadcasters at times use different technologies while televising a match and Johannesburg Test is a case in point.

“In the end, it must be remembered that there needs to be conclusive evidence to over-turn the decision of the on-field umpire as the Decision Review System has been designed to eliminate the obvious umpiring errors.”

Former Australian international cricketer Matthew Hayden is to join the board of Cricket Australia (CA) to replace former captain Allan Border AO, who is standing down after seven years.

In welcoming Hayden to the Board, CA Chairman Jack Clarke praised Allan Border for volunteering his time to serve Australian cricket at a national level for an extended time.

“I think it is fantastic that someone of his stature and workload was willing to give seven years of his time in unpaid service to the game at a national level,” Mr Clarke said.

“I am also delighted to welcome Matt Hayden on board – - he brings a combination of contemporary, elite playing experience in all major cricketing nations; additional understanding of player issues through his work on the board of the Australian Cricketer’s Association, experience in the new Twenty20 phenomena as an IPL player, and a passion for development of Indigenous cricket.

“I congratulate Queensland Cricket on having the foresight and vision to appoint Matthew Hayden to the Cricket Australia Board so soon after his retirement from wearing the Baggy Green”.

Commenting from the UK, Matt Hayden said he had stood down from the board of the ACA to take up positions on the Queensland Cricket and Cricket Australia boards.

“I have enjoyed working for players in my work on the ACA board, sincerely thank my fellow directors, the management and staff there for their support, and will take insights from there and from the playing arena with me to the CA table,” he said.

“But I have accepted this new challenge because I am passionate about Australian cricket in its totality, including the kids in the cities and in the remote areas who want to play the game but might not have the access and opportunities I had; the volunteers at a club level who keep the Australian game afloat; and the fans who turn up to support the game; as well as the men and women who represent Australia,” he said.

Cricket Australia’s Board members are: Jack Clarke (Chairman), Earl Eddings, Wally Edwards, Daryl Foster OAM, Tony Harrison, Dr Harry Harinath, Matthew Hayden, Ian McLachlan AO, Bryan Phelan, Mike Silver, Geoff Tamblyn, Mark Taylor AO, and Peter Warner.

Day 1

Australia’s tour of England kicked off earlier today against Sussex at Hove and in front of a sun baked crowd of 6,000,returned a mixed performance and it was left to Lee and Hauritz to post a respectable total . Match Scorecard

Australia struggled early on losing captain Ricky Ponting (8) and Phil Hughes (15) to South African debutant Pepler Sandri. With Ponting’s dismissal came a rebuilding partnership between Katich and Hussey taking the score to 2 for 113. The flood gates opened shortly after with the visitors losing three quick wickets for one run.

Katich fell one run short of his 50 and when Hussey and North followed the opener back to the sheds, Sandri and Kirtley the jubilant bowlers, Australia were in danger of failing to reach 150.

Earlier, Hughes who had experienced a successful term at Middlesex failed to capitalise on his experience when his middle stump was uprooted by by Sandri after scoring just 15 off 26 deliveries.

However thanks to keeper Haddin’s (69) that included seven fours and three sixes, ad an unbroken partnership of 117 between Lee(47*) and Hauritz (65*) Australia closed the first day on 7 for 349.

Brett Lee makes his long awaited return to action later today when he takes part in the 12 a side practice match against Sussex at Hove.

Lee, who has played for Australia in 76 Test matches, last represented his country in December before undergoing foot and ankle surgery. Now 32, this is likely to be Lee’s final tour of England during an Ashes campaign and is keen to go out with a bang.

“Lee’s jumping out his skin to get back out there on Wednesday,” said Australia captain Ricky Ponting, ahead of the four-day game.

“He’s looking good at the moment. He’s trained harder than I’ve ever seen him train before.”

Ponting also admitted he felt the game at Hove would be perfect preparation for English wickets: “We believe that the conditions here are more like the Cardiff wicket than anywhere else in the country so it will be good to get used to the pace and the bounce.”

Mitchell Johnson, who is a certainty choice for the first Test, sits out today’s game against Sussex. Lee, who has taken 310 Test wickets is no longer an automatic choice to lead the bowling attack. Times are changing in Australia with a number of pacemen challenging for the limited spaces. With spin expected to play a big part in the first Test one of Hilfenhaus, Siddle, Clark or Lee will miss out.

Spinner Nathan Hauritz is expected to play against Sussex.

“It’s important for him and all our bowlers to take what opportunities come their way in the next couple of weeks,” said Ponting.

“We’ve got some big selections to be made there as far as the make-up goes for the first Test. All the guys know that.”

The 2009 Ashes tour of England begins in less than 12 hours and perhaps predictably, Australia have injury concerns with Shane Watson’s fitness.

Injury prone Watson has suffered a knee injury ahead of tomorrow’s opening match against Sussex at Hove.

Watson has had a scan on his knee, the injury has prevented him from training in Hove with the rest of the squad. Results of the scan are expected on Wednesday.

Australia is expected to call up a replacement for Watson if Wednesday’s results prove to be worse than first expected. Watson, despite his tag as an all rounder was selected primarily as a batsman who could bowl when required. The injury will be a huge blow for Australia as it looks to retain the Ashes in a little over two weeks.

“We might have to do that,” said Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

“That’s what some of the discussion this afternoon’s about, particularly if we happen to have, for an unknown reason, a batter happen to hurt themselves in this game then we could be a little bit short.”

Hopefully within a couple of days he’s right to start back up and work up on his bowling again.”

“For him it’s obviously a setback. He’s disappointed that he wasn’t available for selection in this game.”

By missing the games against Sussex, Watson’s chances of playing in the first Test now seem remote at best.

Phillip Hughes, the new wonder kid on the block for Australia has, despite furious calls for Middlesex to cancel his contract, produced a dazzling display of batting ahead of this summer’s Ashes.

Hughes has scored a record-breaking four hundreds in four week for the county and at the same time gaining invaluable experience not only at Lord’s but the English weather conditions too!.

The 20-year-old left-hander arrived back in Australia on Friday. His knocks included 118 on debut against Glamorgan, 139 against Leicestershire and 195 against Surrey at the Oval to become the first Australian player to score centuries in his opening three first-class games in England.

More importantly he has also played on three of the five Ashes venues ahead of the Test series against England in July and August. This fact has not been lost on the English media and together with an outcry of emotion from partisan supporters, he has had quite a welcome to England!

“I thoroughly enjoyed it and the preparation has been great to be honest,” Hughes said.

“The big thing was just going over there to experience the whole different culture, the weather, the wickets and the bowlers as well.”

“Lord’s was obviously my home ground for Middlesex and I played at the Oval and Edgbaston as well. It couldn’t have really worked out any better.

Comparisons to the great Don Bradman have surfaced but he has a long way to emulate the Don as Hughes himself admitted

“It is flattering (to be compared with) the world’s best player and the best player anyone’s ever seen”

Replica Australia Test Shirt

Replica Australia Test Shirt

Gone are the days when the Australian Test cricket shirt was sacrosanct!  No longer do you have to wonder what it’s like the don the good old white and well, white shirt and play backyard cricket with your friends and family. Pretending to be the next Ricky Ponting or the former Test great Shane Warne could not be easier anymore!

Rebel Sports are now selling a full replica Australia Test Shirt
complete with Adidas logo, sponsors “3” on the chest and of course the Cricket Australia emblem proudly adorning the left hand side of the shirt.

If you had been able to buy these shirts a few years ago no one would have been able to tell the difference between the replica and the real thing. Nowadays the players also have their player number on the shirt (and one day senior cap) to prove that when their shirt ends up on an auction site or for charity purposes it is the real deal, such is the power of memorabilia these days. Players are often reticent about signing autographs for kids now just in case the request isn’t genuine and they end up on ebay! I’ve seen kids in tears after asking their heroes to sign a piece of paper only for these giants of the game to refuse.

Replica Australia Twenty20 Shirt

A year or so ago (can’t for the life of me remember when) along with the Test shirt, the Twenty20 One Day shirt saw a massive design change to coincide with the sponsor change from Fila to Adidas. The shirt, sponsored by KFC and produced by Adidas is also available. Gone are the arms, promoting the sleeveless “less is more” look. The jury is out as far as I am concerned but I could well imagine hundred’s of kids eager to wear the yellow and grey shirt pretending to be Andrew Symmonds – wait, scratch that, he’s so yesterday, more like David Warner the Twenty20 rookie.

If the mood takes you, why not branch out and pick up any number of additional items supporting Cricket Australia such as
bathrobes
, Beach Towel and cushions all sporting the Cricket Australia logo – what better way than shoe your support for the men in green and yellow – that’s Australian Gold to you my friend!!!

So Get your Aussie gear in preparation for a bumper Ashes summer in England, support the lads with pride – you know you want to!

Australia are currently in deep trouble in the third and final Test match. Ponting won the tos and elected to bat. South Africa Now Heavy favourites as Australia drift to 12/5

Australia reached lunch on day one of the third Test on 2-66 against South Africa but it could have been a whole lot worse for the tourists. South Africa now 4/6 odds on favourites with Sky Bet

Openers Phillip Hughes and Simon Katich rode their luck, helped by sloppy work in the field, with the latter still there at the interval on 26.

Hughes went for 33 and captain Ricky Ponting followed in the next over without troubling the scorers as the Proteas bowlers picked up some reward for their toil shortly before the break.

Cricket Australia and Cricket Cares

Cricket Australia and Cricket Cares

As I was doing my daily surf around the cricketing sites this morning, I parked myself on Cricket Australia’s site to see if there was any news on the side for the third Test in Capetown. While I was surfing I saw an article on the relief effort following the Victorian Bushfires a few weeks ago.

With the rain falling in Whittlesea, Victoria; local cricket clubs in the area received a boost when VB Bushranger Aiden Blizzard, Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria came calling on Thursday.

Immediately following Black Saturday, the Australian squad visited some of the most affected areas to offer support and boost morale where possible. It’s impossible to tell how much of an impact a visit like this has on the locals but one thing is for sure, everyone was delighted to see the premier players taking time out and supporting not only in person but financially as well. Along with the Black Caps, the players dug deep to offer match fees along with a huge number of local and international businesses and brands.

The Whittlesea, Kinglake, Strathewen, Flowerdale and Panton Hill Cricket Clubs were all clubs that were affected in varying degrees, from losing clubrooms to players losing homes, and in the most tragic circumstances, the loss of lives in families involved with the clubs.

In addition Australian men’s coach Tim Nielsen filled his kit bag with the Australian team’s gear from the last KFC Twenty20 International as he promised to Whittlesea CC during the teams visit in February. The jam packed bag was also presented today to Whittlesea CC and contained a number of interesting items, including Australian captain for the night Brad Haddin’s batting and keeping gloves along with his spikes.

Earlier this month a number of Australian team autographed bats were delivered to cricket clubs that were not affected by the bushfires but were selflessly holding benefit days for those affected, with the bats to be auctioned off for the bushfire appeal. A tremendous example of cricket clubs going beyond their call of duty to help those in need.

Earlier this week, The daily Telegraph (in the UK) reported that the changes in weather couldn’t come quick enough for Victoria as snow fell just days after the region was placed on yet another high alert following high temperatures. It was the first snowfall in the region since November and a very welcome sight as locals woke up to the falling snow.

Caroline Wheatley, Mount Hotham Skiing Company senior marketing executive, described it as a “very light dusting” of snow.

“We woke up to it, it was a beautiful scene of flecks falling down. It was quite surprising to see that,” she told news.com.au The fall was the first snow seen in the region since November.

Please take time out to visit Cricket Cares if you’d like to know more about charity and cricket. It’s a great cause.

It’s all change with South Africa today with the newly appointed captain Ashwell Prince stepping down to concentrate on opening the batting. Jacques “the Frenchman” Kallis steps into the breach and will captain the side for the third and final Test of the series beginning on March 19th in Capetown.

JP Duminy will hope to continue his good form in the 3rd Test

Interestingly, Kallis also captained the Proteas in the final Test of the previous Australian tour to South Africa when Graeme Smith was injured.

Two further changes see Morne Morkel and Neil McKenzie dropped from the squad and Imran Khan (opener) and seamer Wayne Parnell (Bowler) replacing the two unlucky internationals. Kallis’ promotion to captain is an enforced one due to Graeme Smith breaking his hand in the second Test while facing Mitchell Johnson. It was the second time in three Test matches that Smith has broken his hand and after going through years of playing at the top level break free, the Proteas captain is feeling a little unlucky!

“We are following the same route with Wayne Parnell as we did with Lonwabo Tsotsobe. They have both benefited enormously from being part of the national squad. We feel that the best thing for Morne Morkel at the moment is to go back to the Nashua Titans and play a few rounds of domestic cricket. He remains very much part of our plans going forward.”

Khan’s inclusion is a reward for a solid season in domestic cricket. He currently leads the run aggregate in the four day competition and had success against the Australians in a recent warm up game scoring a century. With the series lost and Australia ranked number one in the world, Mike Proctor decided on taking a gamble.

Morkel who has been inconsistent of late will likely be replaced by his brother Albie.

When the changes were announced yesterday the selectors were upbeat about Prince’s selection as captain

“Ashwell will take over the captaincy from Graeme and will also fill his position of opening batsman,” commented selection convener Mike Procter. “We felt that it was best just to make one change than to change the top order which would have involved moving several players around.

“Ashwell is delighted to be back in the side and to assume the captaincy in Graeme’s place.

It just goes to show that a lot can happen in 24 hours in the cricketing world.

The selectors also named a 15-man squad for the two Standard Bank Pro20 Internationals. “We have rewarded players who have done well in the Standard Bank Pro20 domestic competition,” commented Procter, “and they will all get a game in one of the matches at least.

“We have recognised that Pro20 is a different form of the game from ODIs, being a very fast game. Our record has not been particularly good of late in this format and this is our last chance to identify players before the ICC World T20. It is not just a question of seeing how they do in matches but also to give the management team the chance to assess all aspects of their respective games.”

There are two new caps in Yusuf Abdulla of the Nashua Dolphins and Roelof van der Merwe of the Nashua Titans.

Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Ntini are being rested for the Pro20 matches.

Standard Bank Pro20 squad: Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors, capt), Yusuf Abdulla (Nashua Dolphins), Hashim Amla (Nashua Dolphins), Mark Boucher (Chevrolet Warriors), AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans), JP Duminy (Nashua Cape Cobras), Herschelle Gibbs (Nashua Cape Cobras), Johann Louw (Nashua Dolphins), Albie Morkel (Nashua Titans), Justin Ontong (Nashua Cape Cobras), Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors), Robin Peterson (Chevrolet Warriors), Dale Steyn (Nashua Titans), Roelof van der Merwe (Nashua Titans), Vaughn van Jaarsveld (bizhub Highveld Lions).
