Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinner Murali Karthik admits that the team’s preparations have been severely affected by the IPL’s relocation to South Africa for security reasons. You can catch all the thrills and spills of The IPL on Setanta Sports. Click Here for details on how to get Setanta on Satellite, Freeview or Broadband The Indian government has refused to give the IPL the security guarantees it sought, as the country’s elections are due to take place during April, meaning that police and troops are not going to be available in sufficient numbers to oversee the tournament. IPL commissioner Lait Modi has therefore opted to move the tournament to South Africa, and Karthik admits that any preparations already made have been affected. “As an international player you are used to playing in different conditions,” he told Setanta Sports News. “But it does put your planning into disarray, and you have been preparing for Indian Premier League games in different venues. All the teams must therefore rework their strategies and plans once again.” Karthik believes that the nomadic nature of the tournament, with no franchise having a home base at a particular South African ground, will also present difficulties. “Now that South [...]

The IPL, forced to move to another country due to the Government elections will move to South Africa. With just a few weeks before the scheduled start of the Indian Premier League South Africa has been chosen ahead of England to host the 2009 IPL tournament admi security and weather fears! Given the unpredictable weather conditions in England, South Africa was the obvious choice. The Australian newspaper (online) posted a very interesting article yesterday that South Africa had sweetened the deal to tempt the IPL big wigs to move to their country and away from the ECB who were also keen to host the tournament. The tournament will start on 17 April, with the final staged on 24 May. Six centres will be used to stage the event, with matches due to be played in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London. There are other factors that render South Africa a more attractive option, including television timings – South Africa is closer to India in terms of time zones – while the cost of holding the tournament is reportedly cheaper in the African nation. The TV rights issue in South Africa is also more straightforward, with Supersport [...]

Following the “Will They, Won’t They” saga, the IPL has admitted defeat and will be held, for one year only outside India due to security issues. The decision on where it will move will be made in the next couple of days but favourites to hold the Twenty20 tournament are South Africa. “Because the government… are not in a position to provide security, we were forced to take the decision to move the event outside of India,” Indian cricket board (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar told a news conference. “We’re having discussions with other boards who have shown their willingness,” he added with England and South Africa being mentioned as possible alternative venues. Wherever the IPL is held, Setanta IPL will be covering the entire tournament. The BCCI had failed to get government clearance for security cover despite revising the match dates three times because the tournament clashes with the country’s general election, to be held between April 16 and May 13. It’s a shame they couldn’t come to some agreement but it will be very interesting to see how the South Africa Cricket Board (or ECB) manage to set up fixtures and security in such a short time. The move will also have [...]

I am starting to have serious doubts as to whether the IPL will ever get the green light for 2009 following the Indian Governments request that the dates are changed yet again! Delhi Daredevils are current favourites to win the tournament at 4/1 “We told them it will not be possible to provide central paramilitary forces for the IPL because of the elections,” home ministry spokesman Onkarmal Kedia told local media on Monday. “We want them to draw up a schedule after consulting state governments on the dates when they can provide security. The ministry will take a decision after receiving a new schedule.” Due to the lack of security and policemen available for the larger venues, one option would be to move some of the games to smaller venues and allow a greater control over the crowd and safety. Shortening the tournament or packing the games closer together is also on the cards but certainly not a preferable option for the organisers. The main sticking point comes down to the fact that the Indian general elections are being held at the same time and due to the enormous security operation involved in the elections the IPL are struggling to [...]

Here we go folks; the time has come to reveal the new look England football kit for the 2009/11 seasons. The England team has just walked out on the Wembley hallowed turf to a rapturous applause as they prepare to take on Slovakia in todays friendly. Davif Beckham will have to wait until later in the game to reach the record breaking 109 caps for England and in so doing will beat Bobby Moore’s record as an outfield player. “Beckham is in good form. He is playing at first-team level,” said Capello. “I’ve had a look at him in training, and it is a very good moment for him.” John Terry in his 20th match as England captain walked out and the whole side wore white plain jackets over the shirts to hide the finished article. The ballboys and ballgirls were dressed in the same (but smaller) white jackets and white shorts. Following the Slovakian anthem, there was a slight pause while England stripped off and revealed the retro shirt for all to see much to the delight of parents everywhere! The kit will go on sale on April 1st but you can pre order to avoid disappointment. Sales and [...]

It is hardly the biggest revelation ever to come out of an England cricket coach, but Peter Moores has admitted that his team do not have ‘long enough’ to prepare sufficiently for their two test matches against India. Following the terror attacks on Mumbai, the England players flew home on Saturday. However, the test squad is set to fly out to Abu Dhabi today and as long as they are happy with the security measures in place – the first test will start on 11th December in Chennai. This means that they are flying out just a week before the first ball is bowled in the test series and Moores admits that their ‘preparations are going to be compromised in many ways’. This is in reference to the fact that the team are training in a country, Abu Dhabi, where they aren’t actually going to be playing. Then there is the fact that the quality of the facilities available for England’s training is unknown as the coaching staff haven’t had the chance to check them out as they normally would. So, overall, the tour isn’t going to be perfect, but considering the circumstances – it was never going to be [...]

At this moment in time, Australia have reached 237-2 at tea in the third test match of the series against India. This is in response to India’s massive first innings total of 613-7 declared. So, all in all, with just over two days to play, there is no doubt that the cricket odds are favouring a draw. Of course, this result would suit India as they already hold a 1-0 advantage in the series. It would mean that they go into next week’s final test in Nagpur knowing that Australia can’t win the series. I guess that’s why they took so long declaring in their first innings. They wanted to score enough runs to ensure they wouldn’t lose the game. Had they been searching for victory, I imagine they would have declared around the 500 mark. However, they were patient enough to ensure that VVS Laxman reached his 200 and that he score surpassed 600. This is a huge amount of runs for a first innings – whatever the circumstance. The lack of an earlier declaration takes nothing away from the way India batted though. Gautam Gambhir was superb as he recorded his 206 which included 26 boundaries and as [...]

In what really is a fairytale ending, Shane Warne, the mercurial leg spinner from Victoria stuck two fingers up at the Australian cricketing authorities with a magnificent last ball victory over the Chennai Super Kings. Why two fingers I hear you ask ? Easy. Warne should have captained Australia years ago and probably would have had it not been for his off-field antics, diet pills and his love for Mobile phone contracts ! He is arguable, well for me anyway, the greatest tactician international cricket has seen in the last decade and runs rings around the current captain Ricky Ponting. I’m not saying Punter is doing or has done a bad job – Warne and team Australia could have been so much better – that’s the scary thought! Warne’s Rajasthan Royals snatched a dramatic victory off the last ball in the Indian Premier League final on Sunday night, pocketing the $1,2-million (about R9,12-million) first prize and ensuring the IPL will be even bigger next time around. Needing eight runs off the last over bowled by Lakshmipathy Balaji, Warne, together with Sohail Tanvir, maintained their cool taking four singles early in the over and being helped out by a wide. Needing [...]

75 years ago the most controversial Test series of them all took place when Douglas Jardine’s MCC side toured Australia with the infamous fast leg theory plan in mind. The aim was to thwart Don Bradman and reduce his effectiveness. Despite averaging over 56 in the series the plan worked and England won the series 4 – 1. However the tour nearly ended prematurely when Australia, or rather the Australian Board of Control accused the MCC of unsportsmanlike behaviour after injuries sustained to Bill Woodfull and keeper Bert Oldfield in Adelaide. Today we are faced with another threat of a tour prematurely being called off due to allegations of racism and sledging, poor umpiring and a general nasty taste in the mouth following the second Test at the SCG against India. Harbhajan Singh was yesterday found guilty of calling Andrew Symonds a monkey and was banned for three Test matches. The cricketing world is divided and today’s papers make very interesting reading. The Herald Sun carries a couple of stories namely “India Suspends tour pending Harbhajan appeal“ and Ricky Ponting’s interview on last night’s “A current affair” is also covered. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has told its players to stay in Sydney rather than travel to Canberra for a tour match on Thursday. The BCCI’s statement said: “The Indian Board realises the game of cricket is paramount but so too is the honour of the Indian team and for that matter every Indian. “To vindicate its position, the board will fight the blatantly false and unfair slur on an Indian player.” And BCCI spokesman Ratnakar Shetty added “Harbhajan says he did not say what has been alleged. “The match referee has made his case based on hearsay.
