Bodyline
Mini Series - Review
You've
begged, pleaded and offered bribes ... the time has
come... the most eagerly anticipated Australian dvd
release since its first transmission in Australia in
1984 (1985 in the UK thanks to the BBC) has been released
today - June 16th 2005.
Starring
Gary Sweet as Sir Donald Bradman, Hugo Weaving as Douglas
Jardine and Jim Holt as Harold Larwood, the Bodyline
Mini Series tells the story of the infamous ashes series
in 1932-33. A mini series that threatened relations
between Australia and the mother country, rewrite the
rules of cricket and gave Australia a new identity during
an economic crisis. Published
by Roadshow Entertainment in Australia
and produced by Kennedy Miller for
the ABC and BBC, Bodyline took the world by storm in
the eighties when it brought to life the greatest battle
of them all.

The dvd
set is slick, well presented and is a must for anyone
who not only enjoys a great Australian drama but also
cricket. I was fortunate
enough to view the master tapes a little over a year
ago and the transfer is as good if not better than what
I remembered.
The audio has been improved and you now
have a choice of two formats; Digital Mono 2.0 (224Kb/s)
or Dolby Digital 5.1( 448Kb/s) Both audio channels are
good but the 5.1 option adds that little bit extra and
even though the mini series is predominately speech
driven, it does use the additional sound well and the
subwoofer kicks in when you least expect it.The mini
series is presented in 16:9 widescreen enhanced and
1.78:1 full frame. I only seem to remember full frame
when I first saw the series and was pleasantly surprised
upon seeing the final product.Bodyline
comes in a 3 disc set, spread across 7 episodes and
has an approximate running time of 330 minutes (it was
shown in 5 longer episodes in the 80's).
Disc 1 &
2 have 3 episodes on each disc with final disc carrying
the final chapter. Each disc has a main menu option,
allowing the viewer to choose between watching all episodes
in one sitting or to choose each episode individually.
Clicking
on the set up button in the main menu gives you the
opportunity to choose the audio required (options listed
above) and a great addition to this release is the ability
to choose subtitles in English for the Hearing Impaired.
The only
thing this release doesn't offer is an extras package
but this could be an option for future print runs. Having
said that if an extras package had been included it
would have no doubt raised the very attractive price
it is currently available at. This release is offered
in PAL format and Region 4 only - available to purchase
in Australia and New Zealand. If you would like
any further information on this release, the region
or have any other question then please do not hesitate contacting
us.Formed by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1972,
