Morris or Maurice Leyland| Back to Bodyline (Players Index)

Born 1900 Harrogate, Yorkshire| Died 1967 Harrogate
Played for Yorkshire and England
Morris Leyland was a left-handed batsman with great strength and a very wide stance. He probably had one of the best ever records for England against Australia scoring 1,705 runs at an average of 56.83 in 20 Tests. His favoured shot was a hefty drive off the front foot, often standing upright admiring his shot as the ball hit the boundary fence with force.
Not one to be defeated, he fought back well after his disaster in his first Test match against the West Indies in 1928 (scoring 0) by hitting 137 and 53 in his second match at Melbourne against Australia. He played in all 5 Tests against Australia in the Bodyline Series 0f1932/3, scoring at an average of 34 with a high score of 86.
