Day 3 Report

Sunday being a rest day gave both teams a well earned rest. Only three Indian batsmen have played for England, and how ironic it is that all three have made centuries on debut against Australia. Nawab of Pataudi was the third in this Test match following in the footsteps of KS Rangitsinhji and KS Duleepsinhji.

England lost four wickets during the day's play taking the score to 479 for 6 at the close. Hammond was the first to go, caught by Grimmett off Nagel - the rubber on his grip working loose and in so doing he lost his grip when playing the shot. Sutcliffe (LBW Wall) fell for 194 after 7 ¼ hours at the crease. At the end of a slow scoring day (most of the blame put upon the young Pataudi) Pataudi remained 80 not out. However we must remember that he was not alone, Hammond helped set the slow pace on his way to 112, keen to take a look at O'Reilly and Nagel.
