Day 3 Report
After
the weekend's hot and humid weather, the players arrived
at the ground to find a pleasant cooling breeze waiting
for them. O'Reilly bowled very accurate balls, infact
he bowled 9 overs unchanged, 6 of them maidens. According
to Jardine's book 'In quest of the Ashes' the English
captain reckons that with normal scoring, 20 overs should
be bowled every hours. Therefore with the fact that
O'Reilly bowled 9 overs before lunch, it just shows
the length of time it took Wall to bowl his overs. It
was a slow day not only for both teams but also for
the Brisbane crowd.
Only
178 runs were scored, with the loss of 8 wickets. Hammond
and Leyland were the two players pre chosen to for the
all out attack, however both failed in their mission
due to the accurate Australian bowling. Paynter, who
at the close of play on Saturday was rushed to hospital
with tonsillitis No one was aware of his problem, not
even his captain as he suffered on the field during
the second day's play. Because of his actions, he wouldn't
be fit enough to bat if required on Monday according
to his doctor. Jardine visited painter at hospital on
the Sunday and was told that if he had to bat on crutches
he would!
With the steady fall of wickets it was looking more
likely that painter would be required. He rose from
his hospital bed and batted for 90 minutes scoring 24
runs. Just as it looked likely that the partnership
between Larwood and painter would see England
through to the close, Larwood was yorked by McCabe.
