Day 4 Report

Verity and painter lasted a further 2 hours and 40 minutes, adding 92 runs for the partnership. Paynter was still very ill but it showed the determination of the England player, the lengths he would go to to represent his team. Paynter was eventually out for a superb 83, caught by Richardson off Ironmonger. Realising he had little energy left, he danced down the pitch to drive the ball from Ironmonger but only succeeded in skying the ball to Richardson.

Australia had little over a session to see the 4th day out, Woodfull and Richardson again opened for the home team. Both openers started steadily although with the score on 30, Larwood was unlucky not to get Richardson caught by Leyland off a full-blooded hook. 16 runs later however the Australian batsman was the first to go, caught at deep mid-off while trying to drive Verity.

Allen was struggling with a side injury, he was ok the longer he bowled but as soon as he was rested, he stiffened up and made it harder for him to return in the hot tropical heat. Bradman was playing more confidently than in his first innings and as his confidence grew, his shot selection became more adventurous. Bradman played a loose shot and gave Mitchell an easy catch at square cover off Larwood's bowling. Ponsford was the next to go playing a leg-glance into the outstretched left hand of Larwood 'resting' after his spell. Jardine described it as the most remarkable catch it had ever been his fortune to see. Woodfull's wicket was the final wicket to fall, caught by Hammond at first slip.
