Hedley
Verity was without doubt, one of the most skilful left
arm spin bowlers ever to have played cricket at any
level. Like many spin bowlers, he had a slow springy
approach to the wicket, ready to deliver a killing blow
to his enemy at the other side of the wicket.
On
a quick wicket, his pace was similar to a slow-medium
to medium bowler, but on a sticky or wet wicket, he
would toss the ball, give it more air and bowl like
an orthodox spinner. He played his cricket for Yorkshire,
and along with his England teammate Bill Bowes, he helped
his side to many a great victory on their way to championship
success in the early 30's. Such was his form during
the 30's that he took over 200 wickets in each season
from 1935 - 1937.
He
toured Australia twice, and South Africa, New Zealand
and India once. At home he again played against Australia
twice, and also New Zealand and the West Indies. In
all he played in 40 tests and took 144 wickets at 24.37,
a useful fielder and safe hands, he took 30 catches.
During
the Bodyline Series of 1932/3, Verity took 11 wickets,
costing 24.63 and scored 114 runs at an average of 28.50.
Many observers mistakenly thought him to be Herbert
Sutcliffe out of form!
Captain
verity, served his country like so many others during
the war and was a POW, captured while attacking Sicily.
He died in Italy from the wounds sustained from the
attack.
