Voce
was a tall, strong man and exceptional fast bowler at
the peak of his career. He partnered Harold Larwood
in the Bodyline Series and during his long career had
a variety of bowling styles including slow left arm,
fast left arm and of course - Leg Theory! He had a strong
left arm and because of this fielded in the deep.
No
slouch with the bat, he scored 4 centuries for his county
and scored over 1,000 runs in the 1933 season. But it
was his bowling that was to be his main love, taking
100 wickets or more 6 times in his career. He topped
the wicket takers on his first International tour (West
Indies -17) and again on his country's tour to South
Africa where he took 23 wickets. During the Bodyline
series of 1932/3, he took 15 wickets in four Tests and
on their return to Australia 4 years later took 26 wickets,
more than anyone else in the series.
His
career ended a few years after the Second World War
- short of bowlers (especially fast ones) Voce again
played for his country but was never at his best. He
toured India and Australia, but weight and age got the
better of him and ended his career as a slow left arm
bowler.
