Besotted by leg-spin as I am, this is a
favourite frozen particle of time because
it shows a perfect leggers triumph.
Herbert Sutcliffe has edged a well-pitched
ball from Arthur Mailey to Jack Gregory
at slip after notching up his second century
of the high-scoring second Test at Melbourne
in 1924 that Australia soon went on to win
by 81 runs. I got to know all these players,
and wicketkeeper Bert Oldfield too, they
were wonderful fellows all.

Here is the fair-haired Don Bradman, 21,
in his first Test match on English soil,
at Trent Bridge in 1930. He made 131 here,
followed by 254 at Lords, 334 at Headingley,
232 at the Oval and 974 runs in all in the
series, still a record. After this English
cricket-lovers were left in no reasonable
doubt that he was the best as he
has remained so ever since
