1975, Lord’s: The summit clash of the inaugural edition of what has now become cricket’s showpiece event was a pulsating affair at the end of which West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd held aloft the first ICC Cricket World Cup trophy. by R Prasad | Direct Link
The Calypso charmers edged out Australia, led by the astute Ian Chappell, by 17 runs in a nerve-wracking final at the hallowed Lord’s ground in front of an overflowing crowd.
West Indies were still stirring the crucible that would produce one of history’s great teams. The side featured veterans like former captain Rohan Kanhai at one end of the spectrum and, at the other, its new, rising stars like Alvin Kallicharran, Gordon Greenidge and Vivian Richards.
They also had the stamp of modern ODI teams: all-rounders like Keith Boyce and Bernard Julien.
They were led by Lloyd, who also batted them to victory in the first final of the ICC Cricket World Cup. As was his wont, the big man bashed the Aussie bowlers around to club 102 off 85 balls, pulling the Windies out of the fire so to speak, after they had slumped to 50 for three on being put in to bat.
The left-handed Lloyd, using Big Bertha like a sledgehammer, and with support from Kanhai (55) put on a partnership of 149 that took West Indies to one run short of the 200 mark.
Some lusty late-order hitting by Boyce and Julien helped the West Indies finish with a 60-over tally of 291, left-armer Gary Gilmour being top bowler for Australia with a five-wicket haul.
During Australia’s run-chase the West Indies brilliance in the field came to the fore with Richards especially excelling. Every time a partnership was blossoming, like the one between Alan Turner (40) and Ian Chappell, who made a fine 62, it was cut short due to West Indies fielding brilliance.
Turner, Ian Chappell and his younger sibling Greg were all run out before Australia stood on the brink of defeat at 233 for nine when the famous fast bowling duo of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson got involved in a defiant last wicket stand to give anxious moments to the West Indies.
But when Australia needed 18 off the last nine balls, Thomson was run out as he came forward to play speedster Vanburn Holder and West Indies became the first ICC Cricket World Cup champions.
And those who saw the Windies play would have recognized that something special was being forged by their bespectacled captain.
